Federer Reaches Finals of Swiss Open Tennis Tournament - 2003-07-12


Wimbledon men's tennis champion Roger Federer of Switzerland has reached the finals of the Swiss Open clay court tournament in Gstaad with a straight-set win over Gaston Gaudio.

Federer, the top-seed, easily won the first set, but was taken to a tiebreaker before winning the second set and the match, 6-1, 7-6. The 21-year-old Basel native will next face Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic. The third-seeded Novak will be going for his first title of the year after scoring a straight-set win over his doubles partner Radek Stepanek, 7-5, 6-1.

Argentina's Mariano Zabaleta has eliminated defending champion Carlos Moya from the semifinals of the Swedish Open tennis tournament in Bastad.

Zabaleta overcame a first-set loss to end Moya's eight-match winning streak at the Swedish tournament, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. The Argentine player next takes on Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador, a straight-set winner over second-seeded Tommy Robredo of Spain 6-4, 6-2.
