Armstrong Maintains Slim Lead After Tour de France Stage 13 - 2003-07-19

American cyclist Lance Armstrong has narrowly retained his overall lead at the Tour de France cycing race. Armstrong finished fourth in Saturday's 13th stage. His lead over Germany's Jan Ullrich has been trimmed from 34 to 15 seconds.

Ullrich pulled away from Armstrong to finish second. Spain's Carlos Sastre won Saturday's 13th stage, a grueling 197.5 kilometer race from Toulouse to Ax-3 Domaines that featured a massive 2,000 meter climb.

Armstrong said he had difficulty recuperating from Friday's trial, which was won by Ullrich. Armstrong has struggled throughout the Tour to maintain his dominance on this race. He has complained of persistent heat.

Armstrong is aiming to equal Spanish rider Miguel Indurain's record of five straight Tour wins.

Saturday was the first stage in the mountains that separate France and Spain.
