Real Madrid Tops Thai National Football Team to Conclude Asian Tour - 2003-08-10

update

Spanish football (soccer) power Real Madrid has concluded its Asian Tour with a 2-1 victory over Thailand's national team in a sold-out exhibition match in Bangkok Sunday.

Javier Garcia Portillo scored in the 29th minute for the Spanish club before Sarayut Chaikamdee netted the equalizer in the 63rd minute. Fernando Morientes got the game winner for Real Madrid in the 67th. Real Madrid captain Raul Gonzalez says he is unhappy about the narrow victory margin.

Playing before 60,000 people, Thailand fielded senior players in the first half to test the powerful star-studded side, which has collected nine European Championship titles. The Thai team launched a series of raids during the first 10 minutes, and the fans cheered wildly even though none of the shots came close to the goal.

David Beckham, however, remained the major attraction. Fans cheered when the England national team captain released his first free-kick of the match, flying wide off the left post.
