Russian player Lina Krasnoroutskaya has scored a surprise victory over newly-crowned women's world number one Kim Clijsters of Belgium, at the Rogers Cup hardcourt tennis tournament in Toronto, Canada.
Clijsters, who surpassed American Serena Williams earlier this week to take over the top ranking, fell to the unheralded Russian in three sets Thursday. After Clijsters won the opening set 6-1, Krasnoroutskaya battle back to win the next two sets and the match, 6-4, 6-1.
Overall, it was not a good day for the higher seeded players. Number-five Anastasia Myskina of Russia was upset by ninth-seeded countrywoman Elena Dementieva, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1, while 10th-seeded Russia Vera Zvonareva toppled number-eight Jelena Dokich of Serbia-Montenegro, 6-3, 6-2.
Number-12 Elena Bovina of Russia knocked off seventh-seeded Amanda Coetzer of South Africa, 6-2, 6-1, while number-four Daniela Hantuchova fell to unseeded Argentine Paola Suarez, 6-2, 6-0. But third-seeded Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo bucked the "seed jinx," as she beat Colombia's Fabiola Zululaga, 6-4, 6-2. In other results, Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia bested Maugui Serna of Spain, 6-1, 7-6.
