1st Full Weekend of US College Football Produces 1st Upset of Season - 2003-08-31


The first full weekend of the college football season has produced the season's first upset.

Southern California's tough defense was too much for sixth-ranked Auburn. The Trojans, ranked eighth in the nation, upset the Tigers at Auburn, 23-0.

Number-one Oklahoma opened its season with a 37-3 win over North Texas. The defending national champion, number-two Ohio State, won its opener, 28-9 over 17th-ranked Washington. The Buckeyes have won 15 straight games.

Fifth-ranked Kansas State defeated Troy State, 41-5. Number-seven Michigan beat Central Michigan, 45-7. And ninth-ranked Georgia shut out Clemson, 30-0.

Sunday, fourth-ranked Texas plays New Mexico State, and number-ten Virginia Tech takes on Central Florida.
