Italy's Alessandro Petacchi  Wins 3rd Stage of Tour of Spain - 2003-09-08

Italy's Alessandro Petacchi has won the third stage of cycling's Tour of Spain in a sprint finish. Petacchi finished the 154-kilometer leg through southern Spain from Cangas de Onis to Santander in three hours, 24 minutes, 13 seconds.

He's the first cyclist since Italian Pierino Baffi in 1958 to win at least one stage in each of the three major tours of Italy, France and Spain in the same year. Erik Zabel was second in Monday's stage ridden in heavy rain, followed by Belgian Tom Boonen.

Spain's Joaquin Rodriguez retained the overall lead. Only one rider in the top 20 is not Spanish and that is German Patrick Sinkewitz in 16th place. The 21-stage Tour of Spain ends September 28 in Madrid.
