Serbian-Albanian Kosovar Meeting Planned for October - 2003-09-30

The United Nations administrator in Kosovo says the first talks between Serbian officials and the province's ethnic Albanian leaders since the 1990s will open in Vienna on October 14.

Harri Holkeri announced the date at a news conference in the Kosovo capital, Pristina.

It will be the first time leaders from both sides have met since the conflict of the late 1990s in Kosovo.

Mr. Holkeri said the talks would be of a mostly symbolic nature and would not tackle the sensitive issue of Kosovo's final status and its ethnic Albanian majority's demands for independence. He said more substantive discussions are expected at later meetings.
