Pro-Moscow Chechnya Administrator Released from Hospital - 2003-09-30

update

The acting head of Chechnya's pro-Moscow administration is reported to be on his way back to Grozny after treatment in Moscow for a poisoning incident.

Russian news agencies say Chechen Prime Minister Anatoly Popov has left the hospital, and expects to be back at work Wednesday.

Mr. Popov was first hospitalized in Chechnya after falling ill following a ceremony Saturday celebrating a new gas pipeline. He was transferred from the Chechen capital to a hospital in Moscow early Monday.

Authorities are trying to determine whether Mr. Popov's poisoning was caused by food he ate, or if someone deliberately tried to poison him.

Mr. Popov has been heading Moscow's administration in Chechnya on a temporary basis while Akhmad Kadyrov is on leave. Mr. Kadyrov is running for president of Chechnya in an election set for October 5.
