US Urges Restraint After Latest Mideast Violence - 2003-10-05

The Bush administration has responded to the latest round of violence in the Middle East by calling for restraint on all sides.

The appeal came from the State Department, which called for all parties to keep in mind the consequences of their actions.

The statement was released hours after Israeli warplanes struck deep inside Syria for the first time in decades. The attack followed a suicide bombing Saturday in the Israeli city of Haifa.

President George Bush was asked about the Israeli air attack as he left Sunday church services in Washington. He did not answer, and the State Department provided the initial response from the United States, which stressed restraint.

The Bush administration has made no secret in recent weeks of its concerns about Syrian links to terrorist groups. Israel claims its target in Syria was a camp used to train Islamic militants, but the Syrian government says the Israelis hit a civilian site.
