Henin-Hardenne Advances to Quarterfinals at Porsche Tennis Grand Prix - 2003-10-07


World number two women's tennis player Justine Henin-Hardenne has beaten Conchita Martinez of Spain to reach the quarterfinals of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Filderstadt, Germany.

Henin-Hardenne, the second seed, advanced with a straight-set win over the former Wimbledon champion, 6-0, 7-5. The Belgian player needs to make it to the final to take the top ranking from countrywoman Kim Clijsters.

Clijsters plays her second round match against Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia, who advanced with a straight set, first-round win over American Lisa Raymond (6-3, 6-4).

Meanwhile, former French and Australian Open champion Mary Pierce of France advanced with a straight-set win over Cara Black of Zimbabwe (6-2, 6-0). Pierce takes on American Jennifer Capriati in the second round.

Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria scored a straight-set win over Jelena Dokic of Serbia-Montenegro in a first round match (7-5, 6-0). Dokic, who was once ranked as high as fourth in the world, has not won consecutive matches in 11 months and has dropped to number 25 in the rankings.
