Fox's Party, Allied Group Fined for Campaign Violations - 2003-10-11

Mexican President Vicente Fox's political party and an allied group that worked for his election three years ago have been fined $48 million for campaign violations.

Mexico's Federal Electoral Institute says Mr. Fox's National Action Party and the Environmentalist Green Party accepted foreign campaign donations, exceeded spending limits and failed to report campaign income, among other violations.

The National Action Party was fined about $32 million Friday, while the Environmentalist Green Party was fined about $16 million.

The investigation into parties that supported Mr. Fox began after they failed to declare campaign contributions.

Officials of the two parties denied the charges and said they would appeal the ruling.
