Florida Pitcher Beckett Pitches 2-Hitter to Top Cubs, Extend Marlins' Season


The Chicago Cubs, on the verge of going to their first World Series since 1945, will have to wait awhile longer. The Florida Marlins rose from the grave and defeated the Cubs on Sunday, 4-0, behind the superb pitching of Josh Beckett, who struck out 11 batters and gave up only two hits. The Marlins got home runs from Mike Lowell, Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez and Jeff Conine. The Cubs still lead the best of seven National League series three games to two with game six set for Chicago on Tuesday.

In the American League, the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox will have a day to cool off from their fight-filled game on Saturday night as Sunday night's game four in the series was postponed by rain. Game four will now take place on Monday night in Boston, with give five on Tuesday afternoon. The Yankees lead the series two games to one.

In futher fallout from Saturday night's raucous game, a 4-3 win Yankees victory, Major League Baseball announced it was fining Pedro Martinez and Manny Ramirez of the Red Sox and Don Zimmer and Karim Garcia of the Yankees.

The winners of these league championship series will meet in the World Series, due to begin on October 18.
