Turkish Weightlifter Mutlu Wins His Fifth World Title - 2003-11-16


Turkey's Halil Mutlu has won the his fifth world title at the World Weightlifting Championships in Vancouver, Canada.

In the men's 62 kilogram weight division, Mutlu won the snatch and the clean and jerk events with a combined total of 322.5 kilograms.

In the snatch, he topped world title holder Zhiyong Shi of China, who finished in second place. Henadzi Aliashchuk of Belarus was third. The defending champion, Yong Su Im of North Korea, failed to complete his lift.

In the clean and jerk, the 1.4 meter tall Turk and Aliashchuk both hoisted 175 kilograms, but Mutlu won because his bodyweight is less than the Belorussian's. Shi of China placed third.

Mutlu is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, winning in 1996 and 2000. He had surgery 18 months ago to repair injuries to his shoulder and arm.

In the women's competition, 18-year-old Mingjuan Wang of China won the gold medal in the 48 kilogram weight division.
