Steve Tyrell Sings of Romance on This Guy's In Love - 2003-11-18

If singer Steve Tyrell's track record of best-selling albums is any indication, his new release may be headed to the top of the charts. It's titled This Guy's In Love, named after the 1960s hit composed by Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

As a budding songwriter, Tyrell once worked alongside Bacharach and David, as well as famed composers Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. Songwriting comes naturally to Steve Tyrell, especially timeless pop melodies, but Tyrell also has a passion for performing the classics.

Steve Tyrell tips his hat to love and romance on his new collection of pop standards. From George and Ira Gershwin's I've Got A Crush On You to Rodgers and Hart's Isn't It Romantic, Tyrell blends old-fashioned pop and swing with vintage rhythm and blues. He says his new album contains "the greatest songs ever written," adding, "What I'm most proud of is that I do something that stays true to these great songs."

Steve Tyrell began as an R&B singer in Houston, Texas. Inspired by the music of Ray Charles, Otis Redding and Ben E. King, he worked as a promoter for a local record distributor. Some of his best experience came from working in a New Orleans recording studio with Aaron Neville and Dr. John.

At 18, Tyrell moved to New York, and became part of the city's new crop of pop songwriters. Among his composing credits is the Number One hit, How Do You Talk To An Angel, and co-producing two Grammy Award-winning singles for Linda Ronstadt. He's also written music for film and television. Audiences heard Tyrell sing three songs in the hit films Father of the Bride and Father of the Bride, Part II, opening the door to his new career as a solo recording artist.

As with his first two albums, A New Standard and Standard Time, Tyrell features several noted jazz artists on his new CD, This Guy's In Love, including trumpeter Clark Terry and saxophonist Michael Brecker, with a special guest performance on piano by Burt Bacharach.

Sadly, on October 27, one day before the release of This Guy's In Love, Steve Tyrell's wife Stephanie lost an 18-month battle with cancer. Stephanie was an acclaimed songwriter and producer, as well as Steve's longtime collaborator.

For his new album, Steve Tyrell dedicated the song Love Like Ours to his wife, Stephanie. It features an orchestral arrangement by Dave Grusin.
