The Commonwealth summit has opened in the Nigerian capital, Abuja. English to Africa reporter Gilbert Da Costa says the opening ceremony was an effort by the government to promote the progress it's made in recent years.
By hosting the summit, Nigeria is clearly hoping to present another face to the world. The Nigeria that was on display at the elaborate opening ceremony was one of a stable country with a hospitable people, rich tradition and abundant investment opportunities. Not the Nigeria that's been criticized for fraud, corruption, scams and violence.
With more than 3,000 international guests and several millions were around the world watching on television, Nigeria put on a display of rich traditions in dance, music and costumes.
