The White House says President Bush has signed anti-spam legislation into law to combat unsolicited commercial e-mail.
Officials say the measure will give consumers the option to stop the unwanted messages, and protect against unsolicited e-mail with sexual content.
The White House says the law creates civil and criminal penalties to deter the unwanted items, known as spam, that are misleading or fraudulent.
Senders of unsolicited, unlabeled sexually-oriented messages are also subject to punishment.
