South Africa Cricket Team Tops Visiting West Indies - 2003-12-16

South Africa's cricket team has beaten the visiting West Indies by 189 runs in the first test played in Johannesburg.

Fast bowler Shaun Pollock claimed the final wicket off Corey Collymore on the fifth and final day to give Graeme Smith his first win as captain on home ground. The win marked South Africa's sixth consecutive victory over the West Indies at home following a 5-0 series whitewash five years ago.

Pollock and Makhaya Ntini took four wickets each as the West Indies were bowled out for 188 in mid-afternoon, having been set 378 to win. The visitors had scored 410 runs in their first innings while the South Africans tallied 561 and 226-for six declared.

The second test starts December 26 at Kingsmead Stadium in Durban.
