Reports from Jerusalem say Palestinian demonstrators assaulted the Egyptian foreign minister Monday as he prayed at the Al Aqsa mosque in the Old City.
There are conflicting witness accounts of the incident. The Associated Press says extremists shouted at Ahmed Maher and tried to attack him, but he was surrounded by bodyguards.
Another report, from the Reuters news agency, says Mr. Maher fell to the ground during the incident and then was taken away by his bodyguards and police. The Israeli ambulance service told Reuters he was in good condition after being checked at a hospital.
Mr. Maher was visiting the old city after meeting Israeli officials to discuss the stalled Middle East peace process.
