The U.S. Embassy in Bahrain has issued a terror warning to all American citizens residing in the Persian Gulf kingdom.
The statement issued Tuesday says the U.S. government has received information "specific to Bahrain" of a possible terrorist attack.
U.S. citizens are cautioned to avoid places where Westerners are known to congregate and to reduce unnecessary travel from now through January 2.
On Sunday, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security raised the terror alert level in the United States from "elevated" to "high." The government made that decision based on what it said was a substantial increase in volume of threat-related intelligence reports.
