Sudanese Man Carrying Ammunition Arrested at Heathrow Airport - 2004-01-14

British police say they have arrested a Sudanese traveler carrying ammunition at London's Heathrow airport.

A Metropolitan Police department spokesman says the Sudanese man was arrested, after arriving on a Virgin Atlantic flight from Washington.

Police say the unidentified passenger was detained when ammunition was discovered in his possession at a security check. Police say the arrested man was transiting through Heathrow airport and intended to fly on to Dubai.

Police have not identified the type of ammunition discovered, but say the suspect is undergoing interrogation.

Security has been elevated for several weeks at British airports as the country remains on its second-highest anti-terrorist alert status.

Several British Airways flights to Washington have been canceled or delayed this month after U.S. authorities warned of a possible terrorist plot to hijack U.S.-bound airliners.
