College Basketball: Tarheels Upset Number 1 Connecticut - 2004-01-18

The ninth-ranked North Carolina Tarheels have defeated number one-ranked Connecticut, 86-83, in U.S. college basketball action Saturday.

Rashad McHants had 27 points and hit the game-winning three-point basket with more than six seconds left to give Carolina the win. A last shot by Connecticut's Ben Gordon, that would have tied the game, bounced off the basket.

The win means Duke will take over the number-one ranking next week. Now number two, Duke blew away Wake Forest, 84-72 in Durham, North Carolina. J.J. Redick had 23 points for Duke, which has 14 wins and only one loss this season.

Meanwhile, number three Stanford remained undefeated, beating cross-state rival California 68-61. Matt Lottich scored 15 points and Justin Davis added 13 to lead Stanford at home.

Georgia defeated number-five Kentucky, 65-57 in a Southeastern Conference game. Rashad Wright scored 20 points for Georgia, which handed Kentucky its second loss of the season.

In other top-ten match-ups Saturday, sixth-ranked Saint Joseph's defeated Xavier, 81-73, to remain undefeated this season, seventh-ranked Arizona easily beat UCLA 97-72, and eighth-ranked Louisville rolled over Tulane 79-58. Number 10 Cincinnati crushed Texas Christian 85-57.
