Women's Basketball: Malaysia, China, Japan Further Hopes for Olympics - 2004-01-18


Ryoko Yano sank a clutch three-point shot with just seconds left in the second overtime period, as host Japan defeated South Korea 81-72 in the Asian women's basketball championships in Sendai.

Japan took a 78-72 lead in the second overtime Sunday, before Yano's three-pointer from the baseline sealed the victory for the hosts and earned a berth at the Athens Olympics.

Earlier, Wang Ling scored 16 points as China cruised to a 103-53 victory over Taiwan. China improved its record to 5-1 and also locked up a ticket to the Olympics. In Sunday's first game, Malaysia downed India 88-77. South Korea will play Taiwan in the bronze medal game on Monday to determine which team claims the final Olympic berth.
