US Soldiers Attacked in Afghanistan - 2004-01-19

In Afghanistan, three U.S. soldiers are reported in stable condition after being wounded in a skirmish in the central province of Uruzgan.

U.S. military officials in Afghanistan say the fire fight took place Sunday at a base near the mountain village of Deh Rawood.

A spokesman says anti-government militants assaulted the base and that one of the attackers was killed during the battle.

The wounded soldiers were evacuated to a medical facility at the U.S. headquarters in Bagram, near the capital Kabul.

Insurgents, mostly drawn from remnants of Afghanistan's former hard-line Taleban regime, continue to attack Afghan and U.S. targets, although the frequency and intensity of such attacks has decreased in recent months.
