10,000 Soldiers Set to Guard Athens Olympics - 2004-02-03


Greek officials say a record 10,000 military personnel will be on duty during this year's Summer Olympics in Athens.

Greece says another 40,000 troops will play additional roles during the event, which starts August 13. Those troops are expected to guard Greece's borders before and during the Olympics.

Greece is budgeting more than $800 million for security for this year's Olympics. About 40,000 police and security staff will also be on duty during the Games, while Greece's air force and navy will be on full alert.
