Tennis: Davenport to Face Maleeva at Toray Pan Pacific Womens' Finals

Defending champion Lindsay Davenport of the United States and Bulgaria's Magdalena Maleeva will meet in the finals of the Toray Pan Pacific Tennis Open in Tokyo on Sunday.

Davenport advanced to the final with ease Saturday, crushing seventh-seed Jelena Dokic of Serbia and Montenegro in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. She has beaten Dokic in all nine of their meetings on the court.

The American second-seed, playing in her fifth final at the Toray tournament, is hoping for her fourth title there. She also won the event in 1998 and 2001.

Maleeva won her semifinal match today when Chanda Rubin of the United States, the fifth seed, withdrew due to an injured left knee.

It is the second time in as many days that a top player withdrew from the Tokyo tournament. Rubin advanced to the semis Friday, when top-seed Venus Williams retired with a leg injury.
