Agreement Reached on Procedures for Resolving Cyprus Division

Leaders of the Turkish and Greek Cypriot communities on Cyprus have reached an agreement on procedures for future talks on resolving the division of the island.

Representatives of the sides say the agreement is based on a proposal U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan submitted to Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

The parties will hold their next talks February 19.

Mr. Annan hopes to have a final deal completed in time for both sides to put it to a referendum before May 1, when Cyprus joins the European Union.
