Violence Plagues Haiti Amid US Calls for Aristide to Rein in Supporters - 2004-02-28

Violence and looting continues to plague Haiti's capital, amid calls by the United States for President Jean-Bertrand Aristide to rein in rampaging supporters.

Port-au-Prince's seaport lay in shambles Saturday, after looters ransacked the facility. Elsewhere, a warehouse was torched, and the city's lone functioning hospital was attacked. Recent violence in the capital has claimed at least three lives, and left the city in a state of anarchy.

Late Friday, the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince called on President Aristide to instruct his supporters to stop what the embassy called blind violence against the civilian population. Mr. Aristide is also facing increasing pressure from the international community to leave office.

Speaking on national television early Saturday, Mr. Aristide said he would not step down. He also called for an end to lawlessness.

Rebels who now control more than half of the country say they are continuing to advance toward the capital, and that an attack could be launched within days.
