St, Joseph Hawks Barely Escape 1st Loss of College Basketball Season


The second-ranked Saint Joseph's Hawks barely escaped their first defeat Saturday, when they defeated Rhode Island 57-55 in U.S. college basketball action.

Delonte West's game-winning basket in the final minute gave the Hawks their 26th consecutive victory. Jameer Nelson led Saint Joe's with 21 points, while Delonte West added another 19. The Hawks have not lost a game all season.

In another close game, the eighth-ranked Connecticut Huskies took overtime to beat Villanova, 75-74. UConn's Emeka Okafor, the leading shot blocker in college basketball, knocked away a shot in the overtime period to preserve the win.

It was business as usual as top ranked Stanford knocked off Oregon 76-55. Josh Childress led the undefeated Cardinal with 29 points, 12 rebounds and five assists as Stanford won a school-record 25th straight game.

Other top 10 winners Saturday were Gonzaga, Oklahoma State, Mississippi State and Texas.

Fifth ranked Gonzaga crushed Santa Clara 80-64, sixth ranked Oklahoma State defeated Baylor 72-65, number seven Mississippi State held on to beat Vanderbilt 72-69, and number 10 Texas scored a 74-71 win over 25th-ranked Texas Tech.

In other games, number 11 Wake Forest defeated Maryland, 91-83. It was the sixth consecutive win for the Demon Deacons.

Navy beat Army 43-37 at West Point in New York in a traditional matchup between the two military service academies.
