Golfer O'Meara Claims Victory in Dubai Desert Classic - 2004-03-07

American golfer Mark O'Meara won his first official tournament in almost six years as he carded a three-under-par 69 to win the Dubai Desert Classic in the United Arab Emirates by one stroke.

Tied for the lead coming into Sunday's final round, the 47-year-old O'Meara edged out his Irish playing partner Paul McGinley by one shot. O'Meara completed the event with a 17-under-par total of 271, for his first victory since the 1998 British Open. World number three Ernie Els closed with a 65 to finish tied for third with Englishman David Howell, four shots behind O'Meara.

World number one golfer Tiger Woods of the United States was six strokes back when the round started. He made a mini-charge but fell short, finishing tied with two others at five shots back, after carding a 68 on a hot, breezy day at the Emirates Golf Club. O'Meara collected a little more than $330,000 for the win, around 10 percent of what Woods was paid as an appearance fee.
