Karamanlis to Announce New Greek Government - 2004-03-09

Greek Prime Minister-designate Costas Karamanlis plans to announce his new cabinet Tuesday as conservatives prepare to govern for the first time in a decade.

Mr. Karamanlis says the new cabinet will to be sworn in Wednesday.

His government will face such challenges as the reunification of Cyprus, and ensuring security for the upcoming Summer Olympics in Athens.

The incoming prime minster's New Democracy party won a comfortable majority of 165 seats in Greece's 300-seat parliament in national elections Sunday, ending socialist rule.

The defeated Pan-Hellenic Socialist Movement will control 116 seats, while several other parties will hold the rest.

The United States congratulated Mr. Karamanlis and says it looks forward to working with the new Greek government.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan says he expects good relations between Greece and Turkey to continue. Mr. Erdogan is expected to visit Greece next month.
