Pavarotti Gives Last Performance at New York's Metropolitan Opera - 2004-03-14

Opera star Luciano Pavarotti has made his last performance at New York's Metropolitan Opera House.

The Italian tenor whose high Cs transformed him into one of the world's most beloved classical singers, closed the curtain on his operatic career late Saturday, singing a role as painter Mario Cavaradossi from Giacomo Puccini's Tosca.

Pavarotti made his debut at the Met in 1968 and sang there hundreds of times - more than any other opera house.

Pavarotti told the Associated Press that Saturday's performance will be his last staged opera.

Pavarotti's voice first impressed opera aficionados decades ago with brilliant performances of challenging works by Donizetti.

He won fans with his warm personality on and off the stage, and sold millions of recordings around the world.

But music critics have recently said the 68-year old star's voice is past its prime.
