Poland Denies its Troops Abused Iraqi Prisoners - 2004-05-28

Top Polish officials have denied news reports accusing Polish troops in Iraq of involvement in the Iraqi prisoner abuse scandal.

The Associated Press says it has obtained witness statements that suggest troops from Poland and other countries in the U.S. -led coalition in Iraq may have been involved in abusing prisoners.

Speaking on Polish television Friday, Defense Minister Jerzy Szmajdzinski described the report as "unverified leak" and insisted it was not a "serious allegation."

Spokesman for Poland's general staff, Col. Zdzislaw Gnatowski told Reuters that the military's chief prosecutor inspected Iraqi detention centers where Polish troops are deployed a few weeks ago and confirmed that all procedures were being followed.

Polish troops operate in south central Iraq.
