DRC President Says He is in Control Following Coup Attempt - 2004-06-11

Democratic Republic of Congo President Laurent Kabila has appeared on state television to say he remains in control of the country after a failed coup attempt in the capital, Kinshasa, early Friday.

A Congo government spokesman said renegade members of an elite unit that guards the President briefly seized the state radio station overnight and broadcast a statement, saying Mr. Kabila's transitional government was being suspended.

Officials said a power outage soon plunged the capital into darkness and soldiers loyal to President Kabila regained control of the radio station.

Diplomatic sources in Kinshasa had said earlier that government troops had the coup plotters surrounded in a military camp located inside the city and that the two sides had exchanged heavy gunfire.
