Meeting With Darfur's Refugees - 2004-06-15

The United States is reviewing evidence from the Darfur region of western Sudan to determine if genocide is being carried out there.

US Secretary of State Colin Powell told the New York Times that the legal definition of what?s occurring in Darfur needs to be determined. Government-backed militias have been targeting civilians in Darfur, where a rebellion broke out more than 18 months ago.

More than one million people have been displaced. Jerry Fowler of the Holocaust Museum in Washington recently traveled to Chad, where he interviewed refugees from Darfur.

He told Africa Division reporter Cindy Shiner, ?It was very clear that they fled in terror and it was also very clear that the terror was directed at specific groups.?
