Iranian officials say the death toll could rise in a fiery road accident near the southeastern city of Zahedan that has killed at least 90 people and injured more than 100.
The accident happened late Thursday, when a gasoline tanker truck collided with six passenger buses that were stopped at a police checkpoint on the main road between Bam and Zahedan. The tanker burst into flames, engulfing the crowded buses in a fireball.
Police were investigating what caused the tanker to lose control.
Officials said many bodies were burned beyond recognition, hampering identification and efforts to confirm the number of dead.
