Witnesses say Israeli forces have shot and killed a 9-year-old Palestinian boy during a confrontation with stone-throwing demonstrators in northern Gaza.
Medics say the Israeli army also wounded one adult during the incident in Beit Hanoun. Israeli military sources say warning shots were fired in an attempt to deter the stone throwers.
The protesters were demonstrating against Israel's incursion into the town earlier this week in response to a deadly Palestinian rocket attack that killed two Israelis, including a 3-year-old. At least 12 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since Thursday.
Meanwhile, in central Gaza, troops re-opened a main highway that has been closed to civilian traffic since Monday because of the rocket attack.
