A judge in New York has sentenced Martha Stewart to five months in prison for lying about a stock transaction.
Stewart is the entrepreneur who built a small catering operation into a business empire of lifestyle magazines, television programs and other products.
The judge also ordered Ms. Stewart to spend an additional five months in home confinement and pay a $30,000 fine.
Stewart called this a "shameful day" and called the case a "personal matter" that had been blown out of proportion. She vowed to appeal.
The court rejected Stewart's plea to do community service instead of a prison term.
The price of the stock in her company rose after the sentence was announced.
Stewart is a former model and stock broker who won awards as a television host.
