The final day of Olympic swimming has seen three world record times and record medal hauls for two American swimmers.
The American men set two world records in their 400 meter medley relay race. The team broke its own world record time with a new mark of 3:30.68 minutes, easily beating Germany by several seconds. Japan took the bronze.
American swimmer Aaron Piersol also set a world record with his 53.45 second lead-off backstroke leg of the race.
The win gave teammate Michael Phelps his record eighth medal of the games. Phelps had earlier given up his spot on the relay team to Ian Crocker, but he received a medal because he swam in the team's earlier relay races. His eight medals ties the record for the most at a single Olympic Games.
Australia's women's relay team broke the world record to win the women's 4x100 meter medley relay in 3:57.32 minutes.
The United States owned the previous world record and won the last three Olympic titles, but Australia's women edged out their American competitors to take the gold. Germany finished with the bronze.
With the U.S. relay team's silver medal, swimmer Jenny Thompson became the most decorated Olympic swimmer in history with a total of 12 medals.
