Kerry Answers Bush With Harsh Critique  - 2004-09-03

update

Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry says the record of President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney makes them "unfit to lead this nation."

Speaking less than an hour after Mr. Bush's address at the Republican National Convention, Mr. Kerry accused the president of misleading the country into the Iraq war and doing nothing while millions of jobs were lost.

In his remarks, Mr. Kerry also blasted Vice President Cheney for implying the senator was unfit to serve as president. The Democratic candidate questioned whether the Vice President's five deferments from active duty during the Vietnam war makes him more qualified to defend the nation than Mr. Kerry, who served two tours of duty.

Democrats are eager to reclaim the media spotlight after a week of coverage focused on the Republican convention. Many Republican speakers launched harsh attacks on Mr. Kerry during the four-day meeting in New York City.
