Iraqi PM: Effort to Bring Democracy to Iraq Succeeding - 2004-09-23

Iraq's interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi says the effort to bring stability and democracy to Iraq is succeeding.

Mr. Allawi gave the assessment in his speech to a joint meeting of the U.S. Congress in Washington, Thursday.

The Iraqi leader vowed that insurgents responsible for hundreds of killings in Iraq will be defeated.

He said elections scheduled for January will be held on time, and will pave the way for a government he said will have the confidence of the world and the Iraqi people.

Mr. Allawi thanked America for removing Saddam Hussein from power, and said American sacrifices in Iraq are not in vain.

Mr. Allawi now heads to the White House for talks with President Bush.
