Arab Diplomats Seek UN Condemnation of Israeli Offensive - 2004-10-04

update

Arab diplomats at the United Nations are drafting language for a Security Council statement that could condemn Israel for its offensive in the Gaza Strip.

The Security Council is to meet in emergency session later Monday to consider an appeal from the 22-member Arab League to reprimand Israel for the Gaza violence.

More than 60 Palestinians and several Israelis have been killed since the Israeli operation began last week, after Palestinian militants fired rockets into southern Israel, killing two Israeli children.

Despite the Israeli offensive, Palestinian militants fired two more rockets into the Israeli town of Sderot Monday, slightly wounding one person.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has vowed to stop the rocket attacks, and says the Gaza offensive will continue until then.
