African Security Chiefs Discuss Small Arms Proliferation - 2004-10-04

update

Security chiefs and senior police officers from 39 African countries have gathered to discuss ways to reduce the proliferation of small arms and light weapons.

Opening the five-day conference near Kampala Monday, the U.S. ambassador to Uganda, Jimmy Kolker, said small arms and light weapons have been responsible for "mass destruction," particularly in Africa.

The summit is designed to bring together African, European and American leaders to discuss the challenges to peace and security.

It is sponsored by the Africa Center, a U.S. Department of Defense initiative to foster professional development of Africa's civilian and military leaders and support democratic governance in Africa.
