FIFA Announces World Player of the Year Nominations  - 2004-10-05


Brazilian players have picked up the most nominations for FIFA's World Player of the Year award with a total of six, including Real Madrid's Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos.

A total of 35 players were nominated for the men's award Tuesday, including Brazilians Cafu and Kaka of AC Milan, Adriano of Inter Milan and Barcelona's Ronaldinho.

England has the next most nominations with five, including teenage sensation Wayne Rooney. Portugal and France have three nominees each.

There are also 21 players in contention for the female Player of the Year award.

Voting this month by the captains and coaches of every national team and the global organization for professional soccer players, will narrow the field down to three finalists. The awards will be handed out December 20 in Zurich.
