Megawati Urges Acceptance of Indonesian Election Results - 2004-10-05

update

Outgoing Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri has asked her countrymen to accept the results of last month's presidential election.

Ms. Megawati's tearful comments came one day after Indonesian election officials declared Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono the winner of the September 20 vote.

In an indirect concession speech delivered on the occasion of armed forces day Tuesday, Ms. Megawati said whoever won the election must be accepted by the Indonesian people, because it is, in her words, a "victory for all of us."

Mr. Yudhoyono, who attended the ceremony, praised Ms. Megawati's remarks.

Monday, President Bush welcomed the results of Indonesia's first direct presidential election, calling it a resounding demonstration of the nation's commitment to democracy.

Mr. Bush also thanked Ms. Megawati for her leadership and said he looked forward to working with Mr. Yudhoyono.
