Pakistani Parliament Introduces Bill To Keep Musharraf As Military Leader - 2004-10-08

Pakistan's parliament has introduced a bill that would allow President Musharraf to keep his position as head of the country's army.

The parliament is expected to approve the measure because pro-military groups that favor the bill hold a majority of seats.

Mr. Musharraf pledged last December to surrender his military post by the end of this year as part of a deal with Islamic opposition parties. In exchange, the parties supported controversial constitutional changes that granted the president sweeping powers.

However in recent weeks Mr. Musharraf has said he may stay in uniform to ensure national stability.
