update

The pairings are set for the first round of golf's World Match Play Championship, which begins Thursday at Wentworth, England.

World No. 1 Vijay Singh of Fiji faces a first-round encounter with victorious European Ryder Cup captain Bernhard Langer of Germany. Singh has eight victories on the PGA Tour this year, with three of them coming last month as he took over the top ranking.

Match Play defending champion Ernie Els of South Africa will take on Britain's Scott Drummond in the first round.

British Open champion Todd Hamilton of the United States faces Lee Westwood of Britain. And U.S. Open winner Retief Goosen of South Africa takes on American Jeff Maggert.

The players are part of a 16-man field chasing the biggest first prize in golf, one million pounds, or about $1.8 million.
