update

Sixth-seeded Argentine tennis player Guillermo Canas scored a 6-2, 6-4 win over Austrian wild card Julian Knowle to highlight the opening day of play at the C.A. Trophy tournament in Vienna.

Canas had little trouble with the 30-year-old doubles specialist. The Argentine next faces either American Taylor Dent or another Austrian wild card, Konstantin Gruber.

Earlier Monday, number-eight Feliciano Lopez of Spain overcame a first-set loss to defeat Argentina's Agustin Calleri (1-6, 7-5, 6-3). In the second round, Lopez plays the winner of the match between Sweden's Thomas Enqvist and Czech Bohdan Ulihrach.

In other play, American Robby Ginepri advanced with a three-set victory (4-6, 7-6, 6-4) over Italy's Potito Starace, and Rik de Voest of South Africa ousted Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia and Montenegro, 6-3, 6-4. But seventh-seeded former finalist Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic had to pull out of the event with a bruised rib.
