Brazilian Police Kill Notorious Drug Trafficker  - 2004-10-13

Brazilian police have shot dead a notorious drug trafficker in Rio de Janeiro.

Authorities say Irapuan David Lopes was gunned down in a shantytown Wednesday after he fired on officers in an effort to resist arrest.

Police also say Rio de Janeiro state Governor Rosinha Matheus had ordered them to arrest Mr. Lopes, adding that he was a priority because of his rising influence in the drug trade there.

Following the shootout, police occupied the slum in order to prevent the violent protests that often follow the killing of well-known drug dealers.

Drug gangs, selling mostly cocaine and marijuana, control most of Rio's shantytowns.
