Spain Protests Cuban Expulsion of Spanish Lawmaker - 2004-10-16

Spain has called in Cuba's ambassador to Madrid to protest the Cuban expulsion of a conservative Spanish lawmaker who arrived in Havana Friday in hopes of meeting with human rights activists.

A Foreign Ministry statement called the Cuban treatment of Popular Party lawmaker Jorge Moragas unacceptable. It pointed out that Cuban authorities barred him from contact with Spanish diplomats in Havana.

Cuban authorities called the trip by Mr. Moragas and two center-right Dutch lawmakers, Boris Dittrich and Kathleen Ferrier, a political provocation and interference in Cuba's internal affairs.

In the Netherlands, officials say they will also call in the Cuban ambassador to The Hague to protest the failure of Cuban authorities to grant their lawmakers access to Dutch diplomats while detained in Havana.
