At Least 23 Die, 16 Injured in Peruvian Bus Crash

update

Peruvian police say 23 people were killed and at least 16 others were injured when a passenger bus plunged off an Andes mountain pass Tuesday.

Police say the bus was traveling along a mountain road about 300 kilometers north of the capital, Lima when the accident occurred. Officials believe the driver had attempted to negotiate a narrow portion of the road when it fell off the mountain, but the exact cause of the accident is not clear.

Police say this accident puts the death toll from bus accidents in Peru this week to more than 40. Three other accidents have killed at least 20 other people and left several more injured.

Accidents are common in Peru, where roads and weather are bad and driving regulations are rarely enforced.
